First Fridays Concerts in the Courtyard is a long-standing tradition in Portsmouth, Virginia. The event features live entertainment, beverages for adults and others, snacks, an art market, and free admission to the Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center. Neighbors and visitors alike come together to enjoy live music performed under stately oaks in a beautiful courtyard setting located at the corner of High and Court Streets in Olde Towne Portsmouth..

Sam Floyd Band
Friday April 8
The Sam Floyd Band is an elite 4-piece production led by original member, singer and lead guitar player David Buntz. He’s joined by longtime friends and musicians, Lance Baker on vocals and drums, Andy Harrell on vocals and keyboards and the amazing entertainer and bass player, Alvin Harrison. Recognized as a local favorite with polished skills and many years of performing, they provide quality entertainment featuring classic rock from The Allman Brothers to ZZ Top. Their extensive song list includes Steely Dan, Little Feat, The Eagles, Boz Scaggs, Hall and Oates, Joe Bonamassa and much more. This is the best of “back when” music brought to the local stage for eager audiences enjoying the pulse of live music, that are still loyal to the sounds of their favorite artists.
Horseboy Blues Band
Friday May 3
Anthony Boatner, also known as Cowboy P, leads the Horseboy Blues Band. The group take your on a roller-coaster ride and mashup of blues, country, reggae, pop, and original music. Crowd participation is welcomed, and you never know who might join in onstage!
Horseboy Blues first took the stage at First Fridays back in 2022 and has enjoyed resounding success throughout the region. You’re going to love the energy behind this performance!
Paul Urban
Friday June 7
Paul Urban has released seven albums and performed at countless festivals and music venues. He has appeared on network television, syndicated radio shows, and podcasts.
Paul Urban & Friends is a Tidewater Roots and Blues Band which includes jazz and funk influences in it’s music. The band has expanded it’s repertoire to include blues rock, Southern Rock and Country as well as original music from Mr. Urban’s three CD’s of original music.
Located in Chesapeake Virginia, Paul Urban is a familiar name in the regional music scene – most recently performing in the prominent blues band Urban Hill. With the formation of Paul Urban and Friends, Paul is moving into a more diverse musical direction. During the past several years, Paul has performed at The Williamsburg Winter Jazz and Blues Festival, The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, The Henrico Theater, The Hampton History Museum, The Smithfield Wine and Brew Festival, The Stockley Gardens Arts Festival, The Phoebus Spring Fling, The Bay Days Festival, Gloucester Main Street Blues and Brews Festival, as well as countless Tidewater nightclubs and restaurants. His music is also featured on local radio stations WHRV FM, WFOS FM and WCVE FM.
Allen Hudson & The Halfmoons
Friday July 5
Allen Hudson and the Halfmoonsare a freshly formed alternative rock band from southeastern Virginia. Hudson spent the last 5 years co-fronting the power pop outfit Court Street Company. The Halfmoons are comprised of members from other notable bands from the Hampton Roads region. In 2022, the septet’s debut singles “Summer Lovers” and “Car” caught the attention of fans and local radio stations; receiving radio play throughout the year. Hudson and the Halfmoons quickly proved themselves to be a band that was ready for larger stages; opening for Spin Doctors and Eric Hutchinson.
Ward’s Pocket
Friday August 2
Ward’s Pocket fancies themselves as “an old school original rock band.” During this year’s Veer Magazine Music Awards, Ward’s Pocket’s “Midnight in the Garden” won best EP of the year and they received honorable mention in the classic rock category.
During this show, you’ll experience these musical shapeshifters first hand. Coming from Crab Nebula, EVER G, ETC3, and Who We Are Not, this ensemble fuses mood and driving rhythm to create a style all their own. Join them on a musical ride incorporating rock, jazz, funk, soul, and prog.
Tumbleweed Brothers
Friday September 6
A local favorite, Tumbleweed Brothers are an Americana acoustic electric mix featuring Hits from The Beatles, Roy Orbison, CSN, Van Morrison, Sister Hazel and similar. They are known for bringing an eclectic mix of music and showmanship.
The Tumbleweed Brothers are often found in local pubs and breweries. They have a dedicated following and always perform a good show.
Jonah Ross
Friday October 4
Jonah Ross is an east coast native with a west coast vibe. Virginia singer/songwriter Jonah Ross combines heartfelt lyrics with a unique blend of indie-Americana style to deliver tightly crafted, personal narratives.
Combining his love for 60s and 70s soft rock and early 2000s acoustic pop, Jonah weaves together sincere narratives within his tightly crafted and personal songs.
Jonah closes out the season for First Fridays Concerts in the Courtyard.

The event is sponsored by Support Portsmouth Public Art, Franklin D. Edmondson, Commissioner of the Revenue, and the Portsmouth Art & Cultural Museum. Show time is 5 pm – 8:30 pm.
