• Masks are also required at all times for attendees, regardless of vaccination status, except while actively eating or drinking

AJR’s current single “Way Less Sad” is poised to be one of the biggest songs of the summer. It’s generated more than 85 million total streams, is spending its 10th week on the Billboard Hot 100 and recently hit No. 10 on Pandora’s Top Spins Chart. Earlier this month, Apple Music added it to its “Songs of the Summer” and “Today’s Hits” playlists and Spotify made it a mainstay on its coveted “Mood Booster” and “Happy Hits” playlists. The track is currently No. 2 at Alternative radio, Top 20 at Pop radio and approaching Top 10 at Adult Pop radio, proving them as a force to be reckoned with in the Alternative and Pop spaces.

AJR performed a medley of “Way Less Sad” and their 2x platinum hit “BANG!” at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards, which Billboard praised by saying, “the line ‘I'm A-OK’ hit particularly hard as the countless fans gathered outside sang along – a fitting moment as the world continues to emerge from the ongoing pandemic.” They also took home their first-ever Billboard Music Award for Top Rock Song with “BANG!” at the show.

Both “Way Less Sad” and “BANG!” are featured on the group’s acclaimed new album OK ORCHESTRA, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Alternative and Rock albums charts and claimed the #10 spot on the Billboard 200. AJR will release the vinyl edition of OK ORCHESTRA on August 20. Click HERE to pre-order now.

Re-envisioning what pop can be in the 21st century, AJR unassumingly emerged as a ubiquitous hit-making outlier and one of the biggest indie bands in the world. Since 2012, the multiplatinum indie pop trio—Adam [bass, vocals], Jack [vocals, guitar], and Ryan [ukulele, piano, vocals]—have generated billions of streams and earned one triple-platinum single, one double-platinum single, four platinum singles, and one platinum album. 2019’s Neotheater marked their biggest first-week debut, bowing at #8 on the Billboard Top 200, #1 on the Top Alternative Albums Chart, and #1 on the Top Rock Albums Chart. Cemented as part of the modern zeitgeist, Spotify touted “Sober Up” [feat. Rivers Cuomo] among the “Best Rock Songs of the 2010s," while Apple Music included “Weak” on its “Best Alt Songs of the 2010s.” Not to mention, they remain one of the “500 Most-Listened to Artists” on Spotify. On the heels of Neotheater, they dropped the 2020 platinum blockbuster “BANG!”, which they performed on TODAY, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and even at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The song also cracked the Top 10 at three radio formats, peaking at No. 6 on the Top 40 chart, No. 2 on Alternative radio and No. 1 on Adult Pop and marked their first Top 10 entry on the Billboard Hot 100. Now, the band open up their world like never before on their fourth full-length album, OK ORCHESTRA [AJR Productions/BMG] introduced by the single “Way Less Sad.”

Blackberry Smoke

Blackberry Smoke

Oct 15, 8:00pm

Atlantic Union Bank Pavilion16 Crawford CirPortsmouth, VA23704 Map

The Blackberry Smoke show scheduled at the pavilion this Saturday, August 14 has been postponed to Friday, October 15. All tickets sold for the August 14 show will be honored on October 15 with no further action required.

Throughout their career, Blackberry Smoke— vocalist/lead guitarist Charlie Starr, guitarist/vocalist Paul Jackson, bassist/vocalist Richard Turner, drummer Brit Turner, and keyboardist Brandon Still—has embodied Georgia’s rich musical legacy, honoring the people, places and sounds of their home state. As the band celebrates their 20th anniversary this year, their reverence for Georgia has only deepened. On their latest album, You Hear Georgia, the follow-up to 2018’s critically acclaimed Find a Light, Blackberry Smoke is further celebrating these roots with 10 new songs that feel like Georgia, accented by the addition of Grammy-winning producer and fellow Georgia-native, Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Brandi Carlile). “Dave and I had spoken for the last few years about making a record,” Starr says. “Finally, it worked out, our schedule and his schedule, and we said, yes—let’s make a record.”

“You Hear Georgia” features a narrator who’s underestimated because of outward appearances and misguided stereotypes, which is a theme of Starr’s lyrics this time around, particularly as it relates to the band’s Southern roots. “Lyrically, the song is about the South being misunderstood. It’s obviously a rough and tumble world, and there’s a lot of bad people. But there’s a lot of good people too. It started with the idea of how people might have a preconceived opinion of you because of a thick Southern accent, then expanded into the reality of how some people just seem to have such a hard time getting along, thanks to political or religious views, or simply what part of the country you come from.”

In that spirit, Starr found collaborating valuable as You Hear Georgia’s songs came together. Jamey Johnson ended up lending gruff and tender vocals to the pedal steel-augmented “Lonesome For a Livin’” after he and Starr started reminiscing about a previous collaboration, their 2009 cover of the Willie Nelson-penned “Yesterday’s Wine.”

Unsurprisingly, many of You Hear Georgia’s songs describe characters that are restless and prone to seeking out a change of scenery, in hopes of finding a place where they belong. Against cinematic backdrops with vivid details, it’s easy to empathize with these protagonists as they share pearls of wisdom (“Don’t ever trust a grown man with a nickname”) and exhibit deep self-awareness (“Anywhere’s better than staying here, with the ghosts running thru his mind”) along the way.

Black Market Trust presented by Portsmouth Community Concerts, Inc.

Mar 11, 7:30pm

Churchland High School4301 Cedar LnPortsmouth, VA23703 Map

Adult Tickets $25 each.

The Black Market Trust is an American pop/vocal jazz band that combines the sounds of the great American crooners and vocal groups with the romantic Eastern European gypsy fire of jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. These five world-class musicians have traveled the globe recording and performing with music’s most renowned artists. Their all-instrumental debut studio album, The Black Market Trust, is widely regarded as a milestone in the gypsy jazz world with lead guitarist, Jeffrey Scott Radaich, gaining notoriety for his technical prowess and musicality. They established themselves as leaders and innovators by combining pop “Brill Building” sensibilities with the traditional sound of Django Reinhardt’s Hot Club of France Quintet. Their music has been featured in ABC TV’s comedy series, Happy Endings, and the animated video featuring their song, Referential Integrity, has garnered over one-million YouTube views. Bassist Brian Netzley and Radaich, formerly with the Gonzalo Bergara Quartet, stayed true to their love of Django, combining it with a new sound and sensibility of the great pop/rock bands they grew up listening to and recruiting LA-based session/touring drummer Brandon Laws and Tucson, AZ’s violin hero/Eastern European folk music expert Nick Coventry. The lineup includes wunderkind Kale Stiles on rhythm guitar, clarinet and saxophone, and even lap steel. Vocals merge their love of everything from The Mills Brothers to The Beach Boys, from Sinatra to Lennon/McCartney.
