Dale Point Monument marks the location of the birthplace of Commodore Richard Dale. Born in 1756 along the shores of the Western Branch of the Elizabeth River, Richard Dale served in the first U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant under John Paul Jones on the Bon Homme Richard. Dale served as the U.S. Navy’s first Commondant of the Gosport Shipyard. The monument is located on private property but can be viewed from the road. It sits at the end of a cul de sac, so turning a vehicle around may be difficult. We recommend parking on Sussex St. and walking the few short blocks to see the monument.
