The Antonym: Holiday Activities at the Children’s Museum

The Antonym, Norfolk’s PhotoJournal for the Arts has written a piece just in time for the holiday season to showcase Portsmouth’s Winter Wonderland at the Children’s Museum of Virginia. The Antonym aims “to document Norfolk’s arts and music scene while raising issues and covering stories through the use of photography and essays. Any picture worth more than one word is probably wasting some words.”
The article is entitled “Walking in a Winter Wonderland in Portsmouth,” and details many of the exciting things happening at the Children’s Museum of Virginia this year including:
Winter Wonderland: The Coleman Collection. This beloved holiday display has been scaled down this year and moved to the Children’s Museum of Virginia while renovations are taking place at the Portsmouth Arts and Cultural Center. The display is up from November 29-December 31. For those who would prefer to tour the displays when children are not visiting the museum, there is a special “Adults Only” night on Thursday, December 12th. The cost is $10 and food and drink is included for this evening event.
As a special holiday gift, the museum admission has been dropped to $5 per person (adult and children). Tickets may be purchased online to avoid the lines by visiting the Children’s Museum of Virginia website.
Snow Wonders is another popular exhibit at the Children’s Museum of Virginia. At 5:30 and 7:00 each Friday and Saturday evening, guests fill the Middle Street Mall outside the Children’s Museum of Virginia to catch a snowflake as it falls form the sky. The lights and music make it even more exciting. After all, we get to see so little snow in Coastal Virginia, it might be the only snow you see all year!
Sock Skating is a special activity offered during the holiday season. Along with the bubble room, the planetarium, and the cranes, sock skating will round out your visit to the Children’s Museum of Virginia. Who knows, you might even work up an appetite and want to visit one of the great restaurants along historic High Street.
