Oak Grove Cemetery, sometimes referred to as Portlock Cemetery, holds the remains of over 13,000 people. This Virginia historical site opened in 1850. The cemetery is home to civil war veterans, victims of the Yellow Fever epidemic, and many notable Portsmouth citizens such as Congressmen Harry Lee Maynard and Norman Hamilton, Congressional Medal of Honor recipients James Francis O’Conner, Jesse Whitfield Covington, and Samuel Woods. The cemetery is closed for future burials.
